Unprecedented, foreigners quarrel: for today, Chinese games have been waiting for 10 years
Text/Wang Dan
Today, the nominations for the 2024 TGA (The Game Awards) awards were announced. "Black Myth: Wukong" (hereinafter referred to as "Black Myth") was nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, and Best Actionand Best Art Direction.
"Is "Black Myth" the world's top masterpiece, or is it only the Chinese people who are proud of themselves?" This question, which has been hotly discussed for nearly half a year, has finally been finalized - being shortlisted for the most critical nomination in the world's most influential and known as the Oscars of the game industry is enough to show that it is recognized as the top class in the world.
Looking back at previous TGAs, Chinese games have won some awards in the e-sports and mobile game categories, but this year is the first time that they have been shortlisted for the best award of the year that has attracted the most attention in the European and American markets.
This is a good news worthy of the whole industry to celebrate with champagne, because this matter goes far beyond the scope of "a single product succeeds in the world", it confirms a greater fact: Chinese games are not equal to "only copying" or "only mobile games are strong", the triple-A dream is not the self-congratulatory of the Chinese people, we have really made a stand-alone masterpiece recognized by the global market.
You know, the TGA jury is composed of hundreds of media, of which only about 5 are Chinese mainland media, and most of the European and American media participated in the nomination and award. This also shows from the side that the overseas public opinion field is changing the view of Chinese games, and even boiling - in fact, many foreigners have already quarreled on the Internet for "Black Myth".

In order to break the TGA, how hard do the Chinese people fight?
Looking back on the past 10 years, the performance of Chinese games in the TGA can be called a textbook of "how to make others look down on themselves".
Back in 2014, although TGA had just been established, it was already well-known in the global player circle. Its predecessor was the VGA (Spike Video Game Awards), which has been held since 2003, and in 2014, after Spike TV announced the end of the event, the original VGA host Geoff Keighley paid out of his own pocket to prepare the TGA, taking over the banner of the game Oscars.
But whether it is the VGA that has been running for many years, or the TGA that was just established that year, it is an award that has nothing to do with Chinese games - there is no live broadcast in China, no voting channels, and no domestic games have been shortlisted. Those consoles and stand-alone players can only look at the "foreign" and sigh, and find their own ways to discuss and pay attention.
The first time domestic players participated in the TGA was two years later: in 2016, TGA cooperated with Tencent to conduct live broadcasts in China for the first time, for which TGA separately added a Chinese Fan Game Award (Chinese Fan Game Award) to Chinese players.
China Fans' Choice Award 2016 winner for League of Legends
The winner of 2017 is "Sword Net 3 Remake"
This award sounds like a lot of face, but it can't stand up to careful study. Because at that time, domestic players could only vote for this award, and the winner of the award was announced by the host during the oral broadcast at the awards party, not in front of the stage. This kind of divided voting design and award treatment has made many Chinese people feel that they are treated differently and deliberately comforted by the TGA.
But fortunately, soon Chinese players took real data, so that the TGA recognized who is shaping the top stream.
In 2016, TGA's audience soared by 65% to 3.8 million thanks to Tencent's domestic live broadcast, and TGA founder Geoff praised the enthusiasm of Chinese gamers in an interview. At the start of the 2017 event, Geoff again mentioned the huge growth in Chinese audiences, when the TGA saw a direct jump to 11.5 million viewers. Correspondingly, the TGA jury presented the first Chinese game media (A9VG).
Perhaps recognizing the importance of Chinese players, or wanting to deepen the globalization of the event, TGA opened a voting channel for all awards in China for the first time through bilibili in 2018.
At this point, Chinese players have finally obtained the complete right to participate on an equal footing, and they are no longer subject to special treatment. The China Fan Choice Award was cancelled and later evolved into the Voice of the Players Award in 2019 (currently the only award in the TGA where 100% of players vote to win).
Also in 2018, the TGA Committee ushered in the first and only representative of a Chinese manufacturer: Ma Xiaoyi, senior vice president of Tencent. Although the committee does not vote for the awards, but is responsible for guiding the TGA's vision, it can be seen from Geoff's statement that the TGA welcomes Tencent because they realize the significance of globalization. The number of Chinese game media in the jury has also increased to four.
At this point, the TGA has finally been pried open by Chinese games.

But there's one very awkward question...... Now Chinese players have voting channels, and the committee and jury also have a Chinese presence, but where are Chinese games?
Before the 2016 China Fan Awards, there had never been a local Chinese game on TGA. If this controversial ad hoc award is removed, the first appearance of a game developed by a Chinese manufacturer will have to be pushed back even further.
On the one hand, it is related to the late discourse of Chinese games, but on the other hand, it is also the fact that domestic games themselves are not hard enough. Some netizens commented, in fact, there is nothing wrong with the special Chinese fan award, what really makes people feel sad is that looking at the nominations of the special awards, and then looking at the nominations of other TGA awards, we really don't seem to have any products that can wrestle with others.
It's not that Chinese games don't work hard, after all, the game industry around the world is at different stages of development: looking back at 2014, all kinds of PCs, consoles, and mobile games produced by European, American and Japanese manufacturers have been competing for the TGA, but in 2013-2014, what stage is China's game industry in? After the ban was lifted in 2014, game consoles officially entered the Chinese market; Web games are still profitable; The domestic tide is turning to mobile games...... In the face of the demographic dividend, who will have enough to eat and support, and go to wrestle with the world's top performers without any foundation?

However, the speed of Chinese people catching up is very fast, and it didn't take long for domestic mobile games to catch up with the top international level: in 2018, "PUBG Mobile" (co-developed by Tencent) was nominated for the best mobile game; Just one year later, in 2019, Call of Duty Mobile (co-developed by Tencent) won the Best Mobile Game award, becoming the first domestic game to win the award, and continued to be nominated in 2020.
According to Leo, the producer of "Call of Duty Mobile" and the general manager of TiMi J3, they were invited to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to attend the ceremony in 2019, and when the host read out the best mobile game attributed to "Call of Duty Mobile", everyone cheered together: "At that moment, I really felt that the game made by my team was finally recognized by mainstream gamers and the industry in Europe and the United States." And this product also tells the European and American game industries that it is feasible to make a 3A game IP into a mobile game.
Leo is not wrong, more and more overseas manufacturers have begun to set up projects to make IP mobile games. What's more, many large manufacturers have brought their own well-known IPs to Chinese manufacturers to cooperate, such as Nintendo's Pokémon, Respawn's Apex Legends, and Blizzard's Diablo, indicating that they recognize the Chinese people's mobile game research and development strength.
During the same period, the development of Chinese games pressed the accelerator button.
On the one hand, around 2020, there will be more games that subvert the competitive landscape in China, such as "Peace Elite", "Sword and Expedition", "Genshin Impact", etc. The side phenomenon that can reflect the rapid expansion of the industry is the influx of high-quality human resources - in 2021, major manufacturers began to raise salaries to grab talents, and job salaries have risen sharply, which has also attracted more high-end talents to the industry.
On the other hand, since those years, Chinese games have paid more and more attention to going overseas, and many practitioners have begun to study overseas markets in depth.
The most intuitive thing is that at that time, many large manufacturers built their own overseas distribution brands and achieved good distribution results. For example, "Marvel Snap", which has a turnover of 2.2 billion yuan, is published by Nuverse, a subsidiary of Bytes, in overseas regions; "Tower of Fantasy", which earned 3 billion yuan in the first year, "Goddess of Victory: NIKKE", which has an annual revenue of more than 4 billion, as well as "PUBG Mobile" and "Honor of Kings", are all distributed overseas by Level Infinite, which was established by Tencent in 2021.
Domestic game talents are getting stronger and stronger, and more and more high-quality products are entering the world, and Chinese labels are no longer small and transparent. At the same time, Chinese people have gradually figured out the global market ecology through distribution and understood the preferences of overseas players.
Correspondingly, Chinese games are also showing their faces more and more frequently in the TGA, and have won many awards: "Genshin Impact", "Honkai: Star Railway", "Tower of Fantasy", "Apex Legends Mobile (Tencent Co-development)", "Pokémon Gathering (Tencent Co-development)", "Diablo: Immortal (NetEase Co-development). R&D) has been shortlisted for the TGA, with Genshin Impact winning Best Mobile Game in 2021 and Voice of the Gamer Award in 2022, and Honkai: Star Dome Rail winning the Best Mobile Game award in 2023.
Liu Wei, president of miHoYo, posted a message announcing the TGA's award, and Tencent Senior Vice President Ma Xiaoyi also commented on the Moments: "Genshin Impact is good ????, proud of domestic games".
But don't be in a hurry to rejoice - these achievements still don't mean that Chinese games have gained enough respect from the international mainstream vision.
Because if you look closely, you will find that after so many TGAs, Chinese games are basically going back and forth in the three awards of Best Mobile Game, Best Ongoing Operation, and Voice of Players. And the TGA's most watched and highest-value annual awards, Chinese games have never been nominated.
02
"Black Myth should fight for Game of the Year,
I think they deserve it."
At this point, we still have to talk about mobile games.
I'm not saying that mobile games have harmed Chinese games. As mentioned above, the development of mobile games has brought talents to Chinese games, and also laid the technical and economic foundation. Moreover, many large overseas manufacturers are also taking the initiative to enter the game and try this field with the largest market scale in the world. We're absolutely right.
The problem is that in the eyes of the European and American markets, mobile games may not be able to reach the highest tables, and revenue is not the core criterion for judging the best of the year.
You may remember that at the 2018 BlizzCon, after the official announcement of the first mobile game "Diablo: Immortal" of the Diablo IP, the players in the audience did not cheer, but began to question and complain. In the QA session, a player asked the designer, "Are you sure you won't be on PC?" After the designer replied that there was only a plan to go to the mobile terminal for the time being, the audience cheered louder.
In fact, judging from the flow data, as well as the fact that it was nominated for Best Mobile Game by the TGA, Diablo Immortal is undoubtedly quite successful. It's just that in the eyes of most European and American players, the corresponding platform for big IP and big production games should be PC and console, not mobile.
Necromanov, a well-known game respondent, found that after listing and comparing the 10 best games of the year from 2014 to 2023 by TGA, 6 are complete buyout stand-alone triple-A games, 2 are buy-out triple-A games with single-player gameplay and multiplayer mode, 1 is a buy-out multiplayer 2A game, and 1 is a buy-out multiplayer triple-A game without stand-alone gameplay.
On the other hand: the number of free games that won the best game of the year is 0; The number of service-based single-player or service-based multiplayer games that received the best number of games of the year was 0; The number of mobile or cross-terminal games that won the best of the year is still 0.
The results of many other well-known overseas game awards are similar, and the award of the year can almost be roughly equal to the best buyout game of the year.

At last year's Cologne exhibition, Leo also told Grape Jun that from an overseas point of view, if you don't make PCs, consoles, or single-player models, it will be difficult for games to stand in the T1 overseas market.
So the situation is clear: our lead in mobile games is very important, but if we want to enter the international mainstream vision, we still have to find a way to take care of the preferences of the corresponding market.
In fact, many large factories have also realized this, and have long been preparing for the layout - think back, in the past so many years, have you often brushed up on the news of foreign investment or acquisition by large manufacturers such as Tencent and NetEase, as well as the establishment of overseas studios?
At that time, the hot direction of investment can basically be divided into two types: one is to invest in overseas head manufacturers, such as Tencent has invested in or acquired head teams in various segments, including Bloober, which is good at horror games, From Software, which is good at ARPG, Paradox, which is good at grand strategy, Shift Up, which is good at art, and Ubisoft, which is good at open-world action adventure, etc.; The second is the veterans of the industry who have left large factories and have experience in big works, such as NetEase, which has set up a number of studios in Japan, and the people in charge are basically bigwig-level practitioners from Square Enix, CAPCOM, SEGA and other manufacturers.
Some people may think that this is not the same as relying on their own money to buy other people's achievements as their own? I don't think there's any need to be too myself, because many of Microsoft's, Sony's, and EA's biggest titles are also acquired through studio acquisitions.
In addition, after investing in shares and acquiring overseas teams, Chinese manufacturers can also learn their R&D ideas and development experience in a more reasonable capacity.
Regarding the EA old buy studio, there are a lot of stalks on the Internet
In addition to the above directions, Tencent, which invests frequently, has some other actions. In 2016, Ma Xiaoyi noticed the pain of slow transformation of large European and American manufacturers, as well as the support of new technologies for small teams, so he set out to launch TGIF (Tencent Gameplay Innovation Fund) and began to look for a large number of products from 0 to 1 and the team behind them.
These studios may not have large teams and impressive monetization experience, but they have some unique ideas that may not make products that refresh the perception of the industry. Belgium's Larian studio was focused on by Tencent through TGIF.

The effect of Chinese manufacturers accelerating their investment layout was soon reflected in the TGA's list of nominations/winners: at the beginning, there were only a few products related to China, such as "League of Legends", "PUBG", "Hearthstone (Tencent bought Activision Blizzard shares in 2013)", etc.; With the passage of time, more and more games have the imprint of China, such as "Fortnite" and "Elden Ring";
In 2023, the tactics of "detour penetration of TGA" by Chinese manufacturers have ushered in unprecedented success - more than half of the nominated/award-winning works, including "The Beast Party", have Chinese manufacturer backgrounds. Of the 32 awards awarded, 17 were even related to Tencent, with Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 winning the annual award. It is equivalent to a Chinese game in disguise, and secretly led last year's TGA.
These games are all invested by Tencent

On the day of the award for "Baldur's Gate 3", Ma Xiaoyi posted a circle of friends, saying that "being able to contribute to the success of BG3 is the proudest moment of my game career". Feng Ji, the producer of "Black Myth", left a message saying, "Hurry up, come to me to contribute", and Ma Xiaoyi used the classic line of Red Alert "Reinforcements have arrived!" (Reinforcements have arrived!) In response, Tencent invested in Game Science in 2021, and it makes sense for the latter to ask the former for support.

And after the launch of "Black Myth" in August this year, many Chinese players felt itchy in their hearts: the quality of "Black Myth" is there, and the reputation of overseas players is also good, and from all aspects, there is a chance to cross the threshold of the TGA annual best, and there are not many 3A works that can be played by European and American manufacturers this year, maybe this time we have a chance to rush to the best of the year?
Not only players, but also practitioners feel that there is an opportunity. In October this year, three Tencent executives held a communication meeting within IEG (Interactive Entertainment Business Group), during which Ma Xiaoyi spoke out in support of "Black Myth": "Recently, many students have been talking about "Black Myth: Wukong", which is a phenomenal game. Yesterday I talked to Feng Ji and said that they should strive for this year's TGA Game of the Year, and I think they deserve it. ”
After the TGA nomination was announced, the Chinese people's hanging hearts could be half relieved - "Black Myth" became the first domestic game to be shortlisted for the TGA Best of the Year, which is an unprecedented achievement. Of course, "Black Myth" is not the only Chinese manufacturer background game that has been nominated, and "Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Golden Tree", which was nominated for the best game of the year, as well as "Sword Star", "Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown", "Silent Hill 2 Remake", "Fortnite", "Destiny 2", "Sword and Crusade: Departure", "Rising Tide", "Jeopardy Zero" and other products all have Chinese imprints, which is equivalent to saying that Chinese manufacturers continue to lead the TGA this year.
Looking back on the past, and looking at the fact that "Black Myth" was nominated for the TGA Best of the Year today, I think it may be an inevitability - what it carries behind it is the exploration and accumulation of Chinese games in the global market in the past 10 years, and it is precisely because of these precipitation experiences that some people dare to bet heavily on "Black Myth" and believe that it can be eaten globally.
03
Can you get the best "robe" of the year,
It doesn't matter
Seeing this, some people may want to say that this is just a nomination, and it is not certain whether they can win the award...... But does "Black Myth" really need to wear the "robe" of the year to prove its influence in the global market?
After flipping through the discussion on the Internet, I think that whether you can get this "robe" or not may not be so important.
First, it is more difficult for Chinese games to win awards in the TGA dominated by foreign media and overseas manufacturers.
At present, the TGA jury has hundreds of media, who are responsible for voting for the finalist games, voting for the award winners, and their votes account for 90% of the award winners (the other 10% are player votes, excluding the Voice of Gamers Award), but at present, there may only be 5 Chinese mainland media in the jury; The committee that guides the development of the TGA is still only Ma Xiaoyi, a representative of Chinese manufacturers.
List of committees
Chinese faces are in the minority in the TGA organization, which means that Chinese games do not have a home field advantage in the TGA. Whether or not you can nominate/win the award depends more on the attitude of foreign media and overseas manufacturers.
But on the other hand, this year's TGA nomination of a Chinese game in the Best of the Year is also the result of a joint effort by overseas manufacturers and media. This may represent a public statement by overseas media and the industry, that is, the recognition that Chinese games have truly entered the world stage. And before the TGA, there were already some foreign media who interpreted the success of "Black Myth" as a change in the world's perception of Chinese games:
Rest of World:Camilo still sees “Wukong” as a game-changer: “[It] marks a paradigm shift in how Chinese games are perceived globally.” …… Wukong’s success will undoubtedly lead more Chinese games to seek a global audience while embracing local culture.
Camilo (a Shenzhen-based gaming consultant interviewed by Rest of World) believes that Black Myth changed the game: "It means that the world's perception of Chinese games has changed. "...... success of Black Myth will undoubtedly inspire more Chinese games to bring their local culture to reach global players.
The Japanese Times:…… the world of AAA games will have to brace itself for a reality in which China, its well-funded studios and its players cannot be ignored.
The triple-A game world has to accept a reality: Chinese manufacturers and Chinese players cannot be ignored.
The Guardian:China’s homegrown games industry is absolutely massive, but concentrated almost entirely on mobile phones: this is the country’s first successful blockbuster console and PC game, which makes it very interesting in itself.
China's gaming industry is huge, but it's mostly focused on mobile games. It's an interesting fact that they were the first game to be a huge success on consoles and PC.
The Conversation:In the future, we might not look back at Black Myth: Wukong as just a successful video game, but as a catalyst that helped China close the technological gap with the West.
In the future, when we talk about Black Myth, we will not just say that it is a successful game, but a catalyst for bridging the technological gap between China and the West.
From this point of view, no matter whether "Black Myth" can win the award in the end, it has extraordinary breakthrough significance for the Chinese people.
Second, aside from the awards, "Black Myth" has gained global phenomenon-level attention, and even sparked heated discussions on the whole network. That's why some people say:
"It's not that Black Myth needs GOTY to prove that it's a good game, it's that GOTY needs Black Myth to prove that it's fair."
As early as the beginning of the launch of "Black Myth", many overseas players expressed their feelings that this game deserves a best nomination of the year. It's just that everyone was skeptical about it at the time - not doubting the quality of "Black Myth", but doubting whether the TGA would give a nomination, after all, such a thing as a Chinese game being nominated for the best of the year has never happened before.
Asmongold: "Honestly, it's my best of the year. ”
xQc: "If it's not the best of the year, it's probably the West doing it covertly." ”
Shroud: "I might make you angry, but I think it's going to win the best of the year, 1000 percent, and if it doesn't, it's going to be shady." ”
Approaching the TGA, the discussion about this matter has been pushed to the peak of heat. The reason is that before the TGA, other awards events such as Polygon and Golden Joystick announced their own nominees, while "Black Myth" not only had few nominations, but also did not even be shortlisted for the best of the year in some awards. Many players felt that "Black Myth" was treated differently and began to speak out on the forum to question the fairness of the awards.
Legendary Drops made a video titled "Black Myth: Wukong Forced Out of the Year", and he felt that some foreign media always deduct points for Black Myth with some out-of-context or unconfirmed statements, but not with other games.
Of course, these discussions do not mean that there are huge problems with foreign media and award mechanisms - it is normal for me to have few nominations for my favorite games, speak with a little emotion, and have some extreme speculation.
The point is, this level of support is something we haven't seen overseas: Have you ever seen a foreigner quarrel like this over a Chinese game? This is enough to prove that Black Myth and Chinese games have a greater influence around the world. Regardless of whether you can get the "robe" in the end, this fact will not change.
04
Chinese games are becoming the focus of the audience
Broaden your horizons, and you will find that in fact, TGA and "Black Myth" may be just specific examples in the torrent. And the general trend of this torrent is that the influence of the entire Chinese game industry in the world is gradually increasing.
On the one hand, more and more Chinese manufacturers are willing to bet heavily on PC and console games.
Don't say too far, let's talk about some of the products that have been hotly discussed in the past two years: Tencent took out the "Delta Action" that wants to wrestle with the world's top FPS, according to Tencent's 2024Q3 earnings call not long ago, they are very satisfied with "Delta Action" internally (the revenue mainly comes from the PC side), thinking that it is expected to become a new evergreen product, and at the same time, don't forget, Photon is also holding a giant project under development, "Last Sentinel";
NetEase's "Seven Days World" rushed to the second best-selling Steam in the world; Xishanju has been working on the mecha for 8 years, and CEO Guo Weiwei said that his next goal is to stand on the international stage; Paperfold "Contract of Everything" was first exposed at Sony's press conference; Lingze Technology's "Late Ming Dynasty: Feather of the Abyssal Void" appeared at the Xbox press conference; The actual PV released by the Lingyoufang "Shadow Blade Zero" at the American Summer Game Festival was cheered by the audience; The madness of the Suzuku game "Showa Mikoku Monogatari" has also been hotly discussed by players around the world......
The anchor is difficult to stretch netizens to summarize "Showa Mikoku Story": "Be the American the Chinese imagine the Japanese think you are. When the Chinese imagine the Japanese think the Americans. ”
In the past, Chinese manufacturers may have lacked experience in this area and did not dare to take too big a step. But now there are signs that Chinese manufacturers are becoming more and more aware and more daring to make large-scale PC and console games.
On the other hand, overseas players also have a strong interest in these games launched and under development in China.
At the Cologne exhibition in Germany, which is mainly for PC and console players, Chinese games did not have a sense of existence in the past, but in the past two years, the on-site popularity of the Chinese booth has become more and more popular.
For example, at the 2023 Cologne exhibition, thousands of overseas players waited in line for 5 hours, just to be able to get started and play "Black Myth"; In the same year, Level Infinite participated in Cologne for the second time, and in addition to Tencent's own products such as "Operation Delta" and "Dark Zone Breakout: Infinite", they also exhibited a series of new or well-known products from overseas partners, from "Warframe" by Digital Extremes to "GTFO" by 10 Chambers Collective. It attracted quite a few viewers;
Cologne 2023, the team of "Black Myth".
At this year's Cologne Exhibition, the booths of Chinese manufacturers have become more lively, such as Tencent, NetEase, miHoYo, Xishanju, Papergames, Eagle Corner, Hero Games, and Lingyoufang...... There are many Chinese manufacturers participating in the exhibition, and they are full.
Cologne 2024, the team of "Dark Zone Breakout: Infinite".
Similarly, at this year's TGS in Japan, there were quite a lot of players patronizing Chinese games, and Tencent's Level Infinite aisle was full of people, and there was a long queue for the trial of "Solve the Limit".
"Limit Solving Machine" trial queuing time: 210 minutes
At the Summer Game Festival in Los Angeles, USA, the finale of "Shadow Blade Zero" received cheers from the audience. Even, when the Soul Playground team walked out of the venue wearing their own T-shirts, there were enthusiastic players blocking the road, shaking hands with them, whistling, and shouting congrats...... Liang Qiwei, the founder of Lingyoufang, posted on Weibo bluntly said that "it's too jb trance", and sighed: "Chinese games will definitely be better!" ”
Coincidentally, as a preparatory college student who has high hopes from the Chinese people, "Shadow Blade Zero" and "Black Myth" still have some similar journeys. For example, Lingyoufang also received investment from Tencent in 2021. That year, Liang Qiwei wrote an open letter to all his colleagues, mentioning that the company had completed a round of financing of hundreds of millions of yuan, and the investor was Tencent - at that time, Tencent accidentally learned that Lingyoufang had the idea of making a large-scale PC/console game, so it took the initiative to contact him, and expressed his willingness to provide financial support and other necessary help without interfering in the company's operation, not binding product cooperation, and not affecting the creation of works.
Obviously, unlike 10 years ago, the current Chinese game has the ability to wrestle with the world's top players on the same stage. The TGA Nomination of the Year is like a hole in the paper window that brings light to the light of day.
Of course, we still have a long way to go. The first college student in the village is a starting point, but also a sign of hope: today, "Black Myth" proves that the direction of this path is okay, then we just need to stick to it. As Feng Ji said: Embarking on the road of learning scriptures is more important than arriving at Lingshan.
